The Social Media Revolution

Yeah, I know, this is a photography blog, but occasionally I post items of personal interest to me and this one certainly qualifies. Not only does it interest me personally, but as a business owner this topic is going to continue to grow in importance and how we understand and address the social mediasphere will dramatically affect our businesses in the future.

So I came across this video with lots of stats on the social media revolution. One of the more interesting tidbits is the part where it touches on how people “find out” about information…. in other words, how do businesses reach the consumer? More and more companies — from the largest Fortune 50s to the mom and pops — are discovering that the traditional top-down advertising campaign where the advertiser can throw enough dollars at a market and virtually guarantee a certain market penetration simply isn’t working any longer. The connectedness of the average consumer combined with the ability for every individual to become a customer evangelist (or beacon of warning) to hundreds or thousands of people via their personal networks on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc., means that the consumer is increasingly having their first contact with a business or product not from any direct communication of the business, but from contacts within their sphere if influence. In a word, socialnomics.

And it’s not just advertising reach we are talking about here, it’s all information. Did you hear a few weeks ago about how Shaq found out that he was being traded from a friend on Twitter? Any old Joe with a phone has never wielded so much power as they do now.

So if you are a business owner, you first have to be asking yourself “how am I communicating with my customer?” But after that the more important, and possibly make-or-break, discovery you need is the answer to the question: “what is my customer saying ABOUT ME?”

Skotti & Tony in Atlanta (part 1)

Aw…. where do I start?

I’ve known Skotti now for a number of years and I’ve shot portraits and Christmas cards for her and her kids for a number of years too. As a matter of fact, I attribute much of my success directly to her and the chain of relationships that find their way back to her. She always said that one day when she got married that I was going to shoot her wedding and when I found out that she and Tony were heading that direction you can imagine how happy I was for her.

I have a bunch of images so I’m breaking things up a little bit. It’s going to drive Skotti absolutely batty, but she’ll be getting two or three posts on my blog instead of a measly single post. She pretty much deman… uh, “requested” that when I post her stuff on the blog that I leave it up at the top for at least six months. Since I can’t do that, at least I can show her some love this way. :)

Meet St Anthony. He plays a big part, which I’ll get to later. This is what Skotti sees every morning when she stairs at herself in the mirror.

I could tell from a mile away that these two were sisters.

Here’s 2 out of 3 triplets (which we’ll see more of later)…so cute.

The wedding procession…

I included this image because that’s Nonni there in the middle, Tony’s 100-year-old grandmother whose been praying for Tony to find a wife for over 25 years. She is so amazingly happy to be sitting there while Tony awaits the entrance of his bride. Oh, and guess who she’s been chatting it up with there in heaven?

St Peter Chanel Catholic Church was just built and dedicated in the last year, so it was a real treat shooting there for the first time. It’s a beautiful, beautiful church and I look forward to shooting there again. I know I’m shooting there at least one time (so far) next year.

I know Huy (my awesome 2nd shooter/associate) will claim that it was on purpose, but he got lucky here mid-zoom getting Skotti in perfect focus and the rest of the frame in trails. I love it.

So that’s it for this post. Next up for Skotti’s wedding is the wedding Mass…

Paul is finally home…

We’re so happy that Paul is finally home today after a short but painful (for us) stint in the hospital NICU.

I think being in the NICU does something to their tolerance for pain and discomfort because as soon as they get disconnected from all the tubes and wires they just sleep and sleep and sleep like they are in a total happy land. Joseph was the same way and he will get deathly ill before he complains about anything. One time his school nurse called saying he wasn’t feeling well — they knew he was sick because he was complaining and they had NEVER heard him complain before. Back to Paul…

It’s so funny to watch him every time he feeds because he acts like he’s drunk and is out like a light in no time.

He’s back up to birth weight now (about 5 1/2 lbs) so he’s still a tiny guy. Just like Joseph, he looks like a little old man with all his wrinkly preemie skin.

Tagged: 8 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

Over the summer there was this little blog game going around the internet where photographers were “tagging” each other and posting 8 things about themselves that most people don’t know. Well, Ruth Rackley tagged me a while back so here goes…

1: I know the day that I was conceived. It was in a hotel in downtown Atlanta in August of 1969. That’s all I’m saying.

2: I happen to know that there is a little girl named Mary that tells her mom that my site is her favorite. Every time I post on my blog or add to the gallery, I think about her and ask myself if it’s good for a 9 or 10 year old girl to see what I am going post. The answer is usually very clear.

3: I love cheese. Any kind. Oh, and fruity girlie drinks like frozen margaritas and long island iced teas.

4: You’ll never hear the words “say cheese” come from my lips at your wedding.

5: I lived in Hollyweird, CA for two years where I attended Musicians Institute. I wanted to be like Eddie Van Halen. But then I realized that most rock musicians live off their girlfriends and hand out flyers 27-30 days of the month (and therefore work at Kinko’s) so they can earn enough money to PAY a club to let them play. And they usually have more girlfriends per annum than gigs. I still play guitar some and love bands like xxxxx and xxxxxx xxxxx (SEE: #2). Besides have you seen Eddie lately?

6: I love woodworking. I rarely have time to do it and when I do, I usually take shortcuts because I don’t have enough time to do it right. But I come up with something cool every now and then.

7: I’ve seen the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice at least 20 times. Maria has seen it more.

8: I was almost a priest. I did a little soul searching and even met with the vocations director for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, but after more than a little grace from God I discovered that I didn’t have a vocation to the priesthood. For years I sat in the pew thinking, “*I* could give a better homily than this!” I have a great interest in apologetics and imagined myself up there giving these amazing sermons. So for a long time I thought I had a vocation, but in the end I finally realized that I was just full of pride and really conceited.
